Having traversed the globe with previous stops including Berlin, Toronto, London, Madrid, Melbourne, and Cape Town, Red Bull Music Academy is excited to be landing in New York City for 2012.
Music makers of all methodologies and levels of experience (who will be 21 years of age older by 30th September, 2012) are eligible to take part. They can download an application form from www.redbullmusicacademy.com and send it off with a selection of their tunes before 2nd April to be considered for one of two, two week terms.
One of the most iconic cities on the planet, New York has been immortalised in the pantheon of music - incubating genres like hip-hop, disco, house, bop, no-wave and post-punk, among others. NYC is inspiration central: a place where people, culture and music constantly collide and combine. Whether it's cars cruising the block banging hip-hop mix shows, indie rock stars of tomorrow mashing drums in Brooklyn lofts or kids on the subway shouting the words to A$AP Rocky's new single, music is everywhere.
Red Bull Music Academy is excited to become part of this sonic kaleidoscope this Autumn. From 30th September to 2nd November, the world-travelling music lab and festival sets up shop in the city for five weeks' worth of workshops, concerts, club nights, and all-round musical extravaganzas held all across the boroughs. Producers, vocalists, instrumentalists and DJs of all genres are invited to apply for what will be the experience of a lifetime.
To find out more about what life at the Academy is like, UK hopefuls can attend one of the Red Bull Music Academy events taking place throughout the application period. First up, Red Bull Music Academy and Deadly People join forces to present Discoclash at East Village on Thursday 1st March. Born after some serious banter between dub-lord Skream and boogie/instru-hip-hop protagonist and 2011 Academy graduate Krystal Klear, the party sees some bass heavyweights relieve the subs for a night, to lay down some more funky jams. With Skream having played the odd disco set for fun, new kid on the block Krystal Klear piped-up and laid down the challenge, offering to show Croydon's finest just how it's done. Teaming up with Manchester hero and Hoya:Hoya mainstay Jon K plus very special secret guest tba, the love-in marks the first Red Bull Music Academy throwdown of 2012.
About his own experience at Red Bull Music Academy in November 2011, Krystal Klear comments:
"Going to the Red Bull Music Academy was hands down one of the greatest experience in my life. Getting the opportunity to converse, joke and work with some of the most talented minds in music was an absolute dream: like talking to Frankie Knuckles about Levan and The Loft or DJing beside Erykah Badu were moments I'll treasure for the rest of my life - pretty much the stuff of dreams to be honest. I guess it hasn't come to a total end either cause now Red Bull Music Academy are giving me the opportunity to trounce two good friends of mine ;) and two of the most talented guys out there. Together we'll be bring the Levan/Siano/Mancuso/Hardy Paradise Loft vibes."
Discoclash will be followed by a series of infosessions at Red Bull Studios in London throughout March offering a taster of the Academy experience, in the form of intimate lectures from living legends, all free of charge, subject to availability (line-up and series dates TBC shortly).
Closing the London series on 27th March, Red Bull Music Academy and forward thinking international music festival Sonar will curate a very special Boiler Room takeover. 2011 saw Boiler Room graduate from DIY warehouse upstarts to global Ustream phenomenon, dropping in at any festival worth its salt and bagging sets from the likes of SBTRKT, Richie Hawtin, Caribou and some chap called Thom Yorke. From Sónar, expect a sneak preview of what's to come in Barcelona this June, when Red Bull Music Academy collaborates with the festival for an eighth consecutive year. Details to be announced via boilerroom.tv very soon..
