Azuli August Parties @ Space, Ibiza
It’s traditionally the biggest month of the season for the White Isle, the point when clubbers arrive en masse and the clubs start to do their real business. 2007 is sure to be no different, with record label and club promoters Azuli continuing their commitment to bringing some of the world’s finest spinners to Ibiza. It’s also worked out quite spectacularly for them with the realisation that five Fridays jostle for attention rather than the usual four this year, meaning a quintet of star studded bashes to whet the appetites of salivating clubbers everywhere.
July saw Azuli continue their stratospheric rise towards the Ibizan elite with a new residency at the Space terrace, a glut of star appearances from the likes of Slam, Sebastian Leger and X-Press 2 alongside two of the biggest and most suitable DJs in Ibizan folklore, Azuli honcho David Piccioni and the institutional and inspirational Jo Mills. August shows no signs of relenting whatsoever, with a simply huge cluster of acts booked in to soundtrack the summer for the hedonistic party goers that infiltrate the island.
On Friday 10th August the new breed is represented with the duo of Chris Lake and Kurd Maverick, quickly becoming a dynamic pairing in the new aural terrain of house music. Lake gatecrashed the top ten with his omnipresent ‘Changes’ record in mid 2006, whilst Maverick’s productions on CR2 have rapidly marked him out as one to watch. The two sum up the Azuli vibe of the freshest and most up to date soundtracks direct from the hottest dancefloors, and will no doubt cement their status furthermore on the famous terrace.
The next three gigs also boast three musical titans in a sweltering triumvirate to round off the month. Following directly on is none other than the man who soundtracked Ibiza last year, flying Dutchman Fedde le Grande on August 17th. Both ‘Put your hands up for Detroit’ and its follow-up ‘Creeps’ gained rapid ubiquity on dancefloors both underground and those defiantly commercial. His Sessions mix CD for Ministry of Sound proved what the Dutch had known for a lengthy time, that le Grande is bursting with talent and one of the hottest DJs operating on the planet. A week after his scintillating performance comes arguably the biggest line-up of the bunch, with fidget impresario Switch going head to head with the kings of big room house music, Alan Braxe & Kris Menace. The promise of Switch’s food blender fed cacophony of musical influences squaring up against the shiny polished immensity of Braxe and Menace’s productions is easily a standout, proudly displaying two sides to Ibiza’s incessant club scene in a cataclysmic pairing of the darkness and light in Ibizan music. The final party sees tribal house don Tom Stephan squaring up against another deft new production wizard, London starlet Kamissashake, with the octane charged wonder of Stephan’s dark NY drums the perfect match for the glory of Kamissashake’s expert relicks. The final component in a simply awesome selection of gigs for the month of August.
