Top people’s lifestyle guide Debretts issued new guidelines for mobile phones this week, suggesting downloading the wrong ring tone could be a critical faux pas.
“Think about what your ringtone says about you: head-banging rocker, fashion-conscious teenager, gamer, sci-fi nerd, smooth seducer, tv addict, 'invisible' (default) . . . Can you live with it?” Debretts asked.

Skrufff quizzed a number of notorious mobile phone using DJs this week about their own handheld experiences, including unusually technically literate tech-house type Danny Howells . . .
Skrufff (Jonty Skrufff): what's your main ring tone- and what does it say about you? Head-banging rocker or smooth seducer?
Danny Howells: “Mine’s the old fashioned ringer. It probably means I'm still stuck in the 70s.”

Skrufff: What’s been the best ring-tone you’ve had?
Danny Howells: “I used to make the most loud and annoying ones I could think of. For example, the intro to The Osmonds’ ‘Crazy Horses’ on an infinite loop got me some funny looks in (stationers) W.H. Smiths on more than a few occasions. Skrufff: Have you ever been embarrassed by a ring tone?
Danny Howells: “Sure. It usually happens when I'm picked up by a promoter and we're talking about music we like, then suddenly their phone rings and it's some god-awful trance shite.”
Skrufff: Debretts also recommend people 'don't make calls to people from inappropriate venues; a call from a bathroom is deeply off-putting': have you ever done that?
Danny Howells: “From the bathroom, many times. I usually just turn the taps on and say I'm running a bath; that tends to mask any noises I might make.”
Skrufff: What winds you up the most about how other people use mobiles?
Danny Howells: “It's annoying as fuck on planes, when there’s some fat git (idiot) having a conference call next to you before take off and all I want to do is sleep. Plus I think it's pretty rude when you're talking with someone and they're constantly checking for messages or taking calls.”
