Chibuku inch one step closer to their birthday celebrations with a triple decker slice of madness at the Barfly.
Featuring some Chibuku debuts, a smattering of old friends and a smorgasbord of genre hopping versatility, this is Chibuku in its element.
First up is acid house legend Andrew Weatherall, a man who somewhat surprisingly makes his first contact with Chibuku Shake Shake. Weatherall is Acid House personified. There from the beginning, this is someone who has consistently failed to follow trends and pushed his own agenda. Everyone’s making minimal? Well, I’ll do a blues album. The world’s gone trance and prog house crazy? Time to dig out the dusty Funk 45s. Unrelenting in his musical drive and ambition, Weatherall still stonks out the club sets like no other and remains one of dance music’s enigmas. He’ll be joined in the theatre by Dirtybird impresario Justin Martin, a guy whose squiggly funk and bombastic leftfield beats has earmarked him as one of the brightest stars in house music. Chibuku’s own Emmma seal’s the deal for a frighteningly fun tour de force of disco noir.
Meanwhile upstairs in the loft, Seminal DnB recording imprint Viper takes over with a monolithic selection of talent. Certified scene stalwart Shy FX is the headliner, a man who has taken jungle out from the raves and into the top ten, all the while remaining true to its musical vision. Hospital records soulful supremo Logistics is also in the house, bringing his electrifying take on drum n bass in its most iconoclastic and soulful remit. A couple of blockbusting b2b pairings from Sigma vs the Brookes Brothers and Futurebound & Shock One against Manchester’s deebee talisman Rich Beats and scouse vocalist MC SAS complete the bill, making for a severe rude bwoy outing.
The final segment of the bargain comes forthright in the bar, where the current darling of dance music Sinden will be rocking up. First coming to prominence through his residency at the Frank Tope and Tayo run Rooty parties in Brixton, his quick fire carnival collages of broken beats, swaggering house and out there baille funk caught the attention of Kiss FM where he now has a brilliantly eclectic Radio show. He’s also caught the attention with a slew of genre-defying productions, pioneering the recent resurgence in speed garage and making dance music that’s crunked out for the new millennia. Support on the evening comes from Chibuku’s own wild child Tane, who alongside Liverpool’s barbarically versatile DJ Furness will be concocting a swaggering smorgasbord of category hopping madness.
