Music acts as a time machine.   A melody can transport you back to your youth, unlock memories, take you to the future and beyond.  Finnish duo Shine 2009 has harnessed the ability to mess up your perception of time.

Edgy beats coupled with hazy atmospherics conjure up basement clubs in concrete jungles; melancholic vocals and lyrics evoke lost weekends shot through with a sense of yearning; that twenty-something limbo when you’re trying to make sense of new experiences and emotions.

A distortion of timelines is at the heart of their music.  2009 was the year of their inception – and their name would appear to acknowledge that. Mikko Pykäri and Sami Suova are not concerned about anchoring themselves to a specific era since what excites them is the notion that music can remain pertinent and loved in 2019 or even 2059 – and that its relationship to a bygone year will inevitably change.

On their debut – the self released Associates EP – they condense a summer’s worth of unadulterated joy into four sublime tracks.  All infused with their modern take on the Balearic sound, this is glacial pop to sooth the darkest corners of your mind.

Opener Naturally is a self assured rallying cry  – “Come, gather all around / Its an invitation but not for all”;  Higher tinged with their signature melancholia and lead track New Rules, suggests not so much a Utopian Ideal as a thinly veiled threat.

United in a shared vision and with a keen eye for detail, Shine 2009 work in tandem to create evocative, timeless and original fully formed pop music.   An album is in the pipeline…
