Rather like dub techno, deep house can sometimes have a tendency to leave you wanting that little bit more. I'm always a little bit nonplussed by what people sometimes say passes for the genre, and while it's a broad church, my favourite aspects of any kind of dance music have, funnily enough, hinged on their ability to make you move. Soul Minority's latest offering on Pack Up And Dance may not plumb the abstract depths only reached by the likes of Moodymann and Efdemin, but that was never its purpose anyway.
'Come Back 4 More' jacks along in a linear fashion and has a phat bass that is emphasised further by a subtle organ. An eponymous vocal sample sets things off nicely. It chugs along minding its own business slipping in some delicate touches on the way. There's a warmth to it but a tinge of aggression too. 'I Remember House' uses a small monologue that on the one hand is cliched but on the other is exactly what could be needed to revive flagging wallflowers. Again the bass is powerful and the 'shake it' backing vocals add depth, as does the keyboard. The simple elements are very well-produced, crisp handclaps really do make a big difference, but they don't dominate too much, and neither does the vocal, which is something that the entire spectrum of househeads should be able to dig without feeling too self-conscious. 'Leave Home' is probably my least favourite of the tracks on offer, but that's only a reflection on the female vocal, nothing else. As with the other two tunes, the production is of a consistent high standard.
My pick of the bunch 'I remember House' and while music like this will always have its detractors, lets not forget that tracks like these are the glue that binds a set together. Occasionally a little bit derivative, sure, but none the less effective and probably best employed at the beginning or end of the night.
I Remember House
"I Remember House when it was just one House" - a memorial to the brilliant simplicity of House Music.
