1989 was a year of recession, high unemployment and empty warehouses, the illegal parties which took place in Blackburn attracting thousands of people from across the UK and sparking a cultural phenomenon as the acid house explosion gripped an entire nation. It was symbolic of that era that two young lads, Suddi Raval and Jonathan Donaghy, both Manchester born and bred, should get talking in the back of the legendary Hacienda nightclub and form a dance outfit known simply as ‘TOGETHER’. The underground outfit behind the Blackburn raves subsequently gave them permission to record the crowd noises from one of their parties to feature on their first single, the only request being that they name it after the event, and in 1990 the sound of ‘HARDCORE UPROAR’ was born.
Signed to FFRR by Pete Tong, an A&R executive for London Records at the time, the track reached #12 on the UK singles chart. Booked to perform in Ibiza in the summer of 1990, their incredible fairytale was shot down in flames when Jonathan and his girlfriend Emma, who sang vocals on one of the remixes, were tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on the White Isle. Nevertheless, their memory lives on and the record remains an all time dance classic to this day, not least in the eyes of a generation who once danced along to it in fields as the sun came up.
Twenty years on and things appear to have come full circle, the UK being dragged into a global recession with unemployment rates on the rise again. Hardly surprising then that when Hardcore Uproar announced the return of their (now legal) events and asked Suddi to perform the track live for them in the name of nostalgia, plans for a 2009 version of the record were already well under way. With titanic remixes from One Man & His Dog, Lee Mortimer and Beatport favourite Sharooz set to be unleashed onto Ibiza’s biggest dancefloors, the track is poised to be propelled into the twenty-first century and the hearts and minds of a new generation of clubbers and dance music fanatics across the globe.
“This is the dream, this is the reality and this is the sound of HARDCORE UPROAR!”
