Adopting the exact driven attitude that has seen him rise through the house ranks, Tocadisco has re-modelled the traditional format of a radio station and re-delivered it in his latest artist album 'TOCA 128.0fm' - If it ain't right, do it yourself!
We caught up with the man himself to discuss his thoughts, gripes with radio and drinking '2 Many Shots of Jagermeister'!
What is the concept behind the album and how long did it take to produce it?
The concept is NOT to simply make an album with twelve dance tracks. It’s arranged like a radio show with many funny snippets and samples in it. It took around three months to prepare and a further three months to produce.
The concept is quite different to the usual format of an artist’s album; do you think its time to re-consider the way that producers put out their music?
I can’t talk for other artists; I just follow my path. I have to do what I feel is right for me. I want to make interesting music and creative concepts. I’m bored with all the cover versions and stealing ideas from other artists. If you don’t have ideas then you are not an artist. That’s when you should consider a different career.
Is radio something you’ve always been a fan of, therefore you decided to ‘big it up’ by basing an album on the medium?
No, it’s actually the exact opposite. The radio situation here in Germany is catastrophic. All the radio channels play the same stupid music. No one dares to take a risk and be innovative.
Other countries show that it can work; if the people get the choice, they choose the good music, rather than the Top 100 sales charts put together by iTunes and shopping mall CD shops.
Most people don’t even know how ‘the charts’ are put together and they say its what they like… they like ‘chart music’??? That’s so weird for me. There is so much awesome music and artists out there!!!
Do you have a favourite radio station you listen to?
I wish…
Are there any tracks you are particularly proud of on the album? Releases such as ‘Way of Love’ and ‘Da Fuckin’ Noize’ have done well….
I like all the tracks. For me, every track has its own story. How it came together and what I felt at the time. It’s like a photo album but for music and emotions. When I’m old, I can listen to my albums and think about the time when I produced it. That’s cool.
Your next release from the album is going to be ‘2 Many Shots of Jagermeister’, interesting title, tell us about that, how did that name come about?!
Well… I love Jägermeister… Sometimes a little bit too much… lol
Where do you go from here, the album is unique so do you have any other different ideas for albums to come?
Sure, I constantly have ideas. I have to write everything down so I don’t forget it. There is much more to come. I actually think about the next album already…
What have you got coming up that we should know about?
My label TOCA45 Recordings is finally up and running. I will feature some great young talented people on it. It’s amazing to put my money in something that I love whilst giving support back to the scene.
I’ve also done a bunch of remixes and there are two more singles with amazing remixes coming from the album.
