Belgian dance duo ‘Aeroplane’ became the 500th act to be featured on BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix today (Saturday, 24th April) as part of a special extended live broadcast from Circus in Liverpool.
They were chosen by an expert panel of industry experts including Pete Tong and fellow Radio 1 dance DJ’s Annie Mac and Judge Jules, from a shortlist of DJ’s nominated by former Essential Mix DJ’s including Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold and Carl Cox.
The four hour special show came live from Liverpool to celebrate the long-running show, which showcases the world’s biggest contemporary DJs. The show also featured sets from Pete Tong, Sasha and Richie Hawtin.
Stephen Fasano and Vito Deluca, who form Aeroplane, released their first 12 inch, Caramellas, in 2007 and have since had remix requests from the likes of MGMT, Das Pop, Bloc Party and the Friendly Fires. The duo said: ‘’This is an incredible honour. The 500th Essential Mix, it is such an iconic playground to showcase the great music that we, and all 499 DJ's who have done this mix, are into playing. To get the opportunity to do this anniversary edition is unbelievable for us. We almost did not make this session due to the Volcano and many other reasons, but being here tells us we may be able to fly after all!’
Pete Tong has hosted BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix since it began in October 1993 and he was also the first performer to feature on the show.
Pete said: "I'm very happy that Aeroplane are the 500th Essential Mix guests. They are one of the freshest and most exciting new acts/djs in the world right now and showcasing these acts is what the Essential Mix has always been about."
