The sites targeted by the group were reportedly rendered unavailable for a temporary period. Most have now come back online, although UniversalMusic.com still appears as 'under maintenance'.

MegaUpload.com was taken offline yesterday evening as the US DOJ accused the site's owners of “massive worldwide online piracy”.

The body claims this has caused more than $500 million in damages to copyright holders and generated more than $175 million in profits.

The DOJ has charged seven individuals connected to the file-sharing site, including founder Kim Dotcom and associates Finn Batato, Mathias Ortmann and Bram van der Kolk.

In retaliation, Anonymous - which hit the headlines last year after hacking 70 million accounts on Sony's PlayStation Network - reportedly hit the sites of:

Department of Justice (Justice.gov)

Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA.org)

Universal Music (UniversalMusic.com)

Belgian Anti-Piracy Federation (Anti-piracy.be/nl/)

Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA.org)

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI.gov)

HADOPI law site (HADOPI.fr)

U.S. Copyright Office (Copyright.gov)

Senator Christopher Dodd (ChrisDodd.com)

Vivendi France (Vivendi.fr)

The White House (Whitehouse.gov)
