Colchester-native Kissy Sell Out returns with ‘Wild Romance’, his second album on his own label San City High Records. After exploding onto the scene with a series of technically ambitious remixes in 2006, his rework of Mark Ronson’s take on The Smith’s ‘Stop Me’ gained him particular kudos and was included in numerous compilations.
The buzz was enough for the twenty-something design student to be offered a weekly slot on BBC Radio One, where he’s now over one hundred shows in.
Although he’s known for his fresh attitude to mixing records it was his aptly named weekly Kissy Klub mix, a section of the show made entirely of his exclusive remixes which continues to draw thousands of new listeners to his weekly late night show. Fans not only want to hear what Kissy has made, but also what he has found; he is a champion of new talent and regularly plays tracks sent to him by bedroom producers alongside those from more established artists and record labels.
Kissy first wanted to be a DJ when he was a teenager, an ambition sparked by a chance encounter with a DJ Hype CD at his school. He recalls:
"I remember opening the CD and there was a picture of DJ Hype standing over two record players, which to me was something that my mum had. When I kind of understood what the concept of mixing was, my thought was ‘I wonder if I can mix my records in to each other?’”
Fast forward a few years and Kissy’s debut album ‘Youth’ was released, earning him a legion of devoted fans. He toured the album with a live band, performing at SXSW in Texas as well as all over Europe and Australia injecting his live sets with a level of showmanship that thrill audiences and gain him new fans every time.
Two years later following successes like his Glastonbury 2010 performance which saw him play to 10,000 people, he returned to the studio to begin work on ‘Wild Romance’ - a showcase of what he’s learnt over the last two years. The inspiration from his Radio 1 show is there, but he’s sure that had he never been given the opportunity to be a weekly fixture on national radio, this album would sound very different.
