Treats such as these come about few and far between. You can count
on the fingers of one hand the truly seminal, epoch-shattering nights
that have occurred, lodged in memory like some indelible sonic
signature. Sankeys have brought to Manchester many of these legendary
parties, where names are made, reputations embossed and a delirium
descended across all those present. Tenaglia. Daft Punk. The Chemical
Brothers. 2manydjs. And one more, stepping up to the hallowed Ancoats
decks again, is Laurent Garnier, who stars at a special one-off Sunday
session, already imbued with such reverence that many in the city have
booked the following Monday off. This is a special one to savour.
What is there left to be said about the mercurial genius that is
Monsieur Garnier? Bitten by the acid house bug in the mid eighties,
Laurent hot-footed on a plane and got a job as a chef in the hallowed
Hacienda, his desire that strong to be close to the music that was
setting the fire in his heart alight. What followed was a path through
to super-stardom, combining Gallic flair to the emotional outpourings
of Chicago and Detroit music, and a very pronounced respect for every
tune he came across, becoming arguably the greatest DJ ever in modern
dance music history. Few can rock a club dextrously and eclectically as
this man, yet Garnier sets the benchmark for what truly eclectic sets
are made out of.
Sankeys own sonic stars, Greg Vickers and Mistress de Funk, help to set
alight this special session. Each has become talismanic in Sankeys
folklore, with Greg having helmed the club since the early days and
there really is nobody better who understands the nuances of the
fervent Sankeys faithful. For Mistress de Funk, she has quickly won a
fierce following, augmented by a stint on Radio 1 and now a firm
fixture at many of the UK’s leading clubs.
Jozef K is the new Tribal Sessions resident and has performed alongside
an abundance of internationally famous DJs; Trentemoller, Josh Wink,
Layo & Bushwacka, Nic Fanciulli and Adam Beyer to name but a few,
and this rising young talent completes what is set to be another one of
those rare nights – the type you cannot miss.
