Fans of Wax:On events know better than anyone that a night out at the esteemed club-night is anything but formulaic. An evening that might begin with the dense and relentless basslines of dubstep is just as likely to end with you head-down, shaking your ass to the irresistible drive of techno. What at first may seem arbitrary begins to reveal itself as a carefully crafted plan and Wax:On Music, the promoters' latest outlet for their philosophy, is no different.
For Wax:On Music's third installment you're invited to follow Matt Walsh into their World at 4am with this, the 'Honey Comb' EP. A well honed double-sided authentic slice of techno. As genuine as it is deep, this is music that's been trapped in Berghain for a weekend and has only just found the exit.
Propulsive percussive energy, the hallmark of Matt Walsh's acclaimed DJ sets and productions, which have favoured him with the likes of Tiga, Laurent Garnier, and Luke Solomon, is all in check. Arpeggio acid bassline and restless rhythms form the tough backbone to a landscape of microscopic pops 'n' clicks, rising synth pads and acid swoops. Sonic waves with swarm-like menace push you deep into the soul of the record leaving you with a smile of pure satisfaction and a longing for more.
And satisfaction isn’t something in short supply with this EP either. As a five-track release, Matt serves up another more robust, stiff workout straight after the jump with the steely, regimented rumblings of ‘Radar’. Whilst on the on the B-side, there’s a clutch of internationally produced ‘Honey Comb’ remixes.
Camel proves why Italians are famed for their seduction technique with his trademark solid, physical grooves keeping you locked and teasing you to the midway climax. Meanwhile for the UK, Wax:On Resident DJs, People Get Real prove their pedigree and get rough on you with an intense, heavy and altogether gritty rerub.
Finally, France’s self-styled ‘Winners of the Peanut Club Remix’, Monsieur Monsieur wrap things up with an interpretation full of dramatic tension, rising builds, and tough, unapologetic beats.
