Following the release of the sultry ‘Sequin Burn/Careless Alchemy’ EP, Scarlett Etienne returns with two brand new tracks for the next single on her own Starlett Records label, focusing her sound on a purer techno vision. Her visceral fusion of taut drums, magnetic synths and violent, industrial bass tones on this EP result in two intelligent yet brutal techno tracks that are as mesmeric as they are powerful and are destined to set dancefloors alight.
‘Figurine’ is uncompromising, warped techno at its most potent. Driven by the skittering hi hats and icy snares, she winds layers of melodic tones through the percussive elements that hold the track’s core, building anticipation masterfully as the track unfurls. She finally releases the tension by unleashing the twisted, mutating bass through the track. Imbued with the energetic surge of French electro, the distorted wall of bass gives the track an inexorable forward momentum that carries the track home with force.
‘Techno Cygnets’ provides a more light-footed counterpoint, building rhythmic and melodic elements that intertwine lithely to create one robust, symbiotic structure. Percussive layers coalesce with the spatial intricacy of M-nus style minimal while the Rebotini-esque mechanized synth shards scatter through the track’s atmosphere to create an immersive sense of space and texture that is as hypnotic as it is disorientating.
