Label: ResistReleased: 30th July
Resist, the keen-eared team behind previous stellar compilations such as Bugged Out present and Time Out presents The Otherside, unveil their latest must-have, speaker-blowing collection of tunes. Credibly assembling the full spectrum of white-hot new bands and producers who have turned their talents to the genres of electronic, rock, disco, punk, and rave in their ever-changing forms, SEX, DRUMS & ROCK ‘N’ RAVE is a thrilling celebration of the swagger and diversity of today’s dance-rock scene.
The album features every imaginable amalgamation of this much-vaunted musical collective. Soulwax, regarded by many as the founding fathers of the scene in their 2 Many DJs guise, feature here with their raucous remix of 2007’s biggest crossover hit, The Gossip’s ‘Standing in the Way of Control’. Other coveted, big-name producer/band combinations included on the mouth-watering tracklist are: Bloc Party ‘Two More Years’ (MSTRKRFT Remix), The Mystery Jets ‘The Boy Who Ran Away’ (Riton Remix), and The Futureheads ‘Hound of Love’ (Phones’ Wolves at the Door Remix).
As dance producers re-imagine the ways in which we listen to rock and indie, so the bands themselves take audible pleasure in re-creating dancefloor hits as exuberant drum-and-guitar thrashes. This is expertly demonstrated here with Nicky Van She & Dangerous Dan’s current Radio 1 success-story, ‘Around The World’ – a cover of Daft Punk’s 90s anthem – and WhoMadeWho’s ironic punk recording of Benny Benassi’s electro-dance chart-stormer ‘Satisfaction’.
The increasingly outlandish hype surrounding the rave revival manifests itself on the album with a remix of Math Head’s ‘Do Damage’ by Passions (a new act on Kitsune), who turn in a dirty electro monster complete with wailing old skool sirens. Altern8 (a.k.a. Mark Archer and Chris Peat - two of the founding fathers of the rave scene) are also present with their timeless 1992 rave classic ‘Evapor8’; a track that has proved hugely popular and influential with the current new rave generation.
SEX, DRUMS & ROCK ‘N’ RAVE pays further homage to the crop of acts set to blow-up in 2007 with the inclusion of Dead Disco’s haunting slice of all-girl synth-pop ‘You’re Out’, and Whitey’s ‘Wrap It Up’ – a brilliantly lo-fi electro-pop parody of the urbanite cokehead’s midweek self-pity.
