Gatecrasher Snubbed By Sheffield Council

Sheffield City Council voted almost unanimously against allowing Gatecrasher to open a new £5million venue in the heart of Sheffield this week, despite thousands of clubbers pleading with them to approve the application.

The Sheffield Star said councillors were equally unmoved by a last minute ‘impassioned plea’ made by Gatecrasher chief Simon Raines in which he said he’d spent three years searching for the site.

Councillors instead sided with property developers and 17 local organisations who claimed Gatecrasher’s proposed new site, beneath a city centre multi-story car park known locally as the ‘Cheesegrater’, would spoil Sheffield’s wider regeneration plans.

Dissenting councillor Peter Price (the only one of nine planning officials to side with the club) admitted he was surprised by his colleagues’ decision.

"This is located under a car park and next to a busy road - it is an ideal site,” he pointed out.

"What is the heart of the city plan all about? We are trying to create a vibrant, high quality city centre with great facilities. We need something for everyone,” he suggested. Sheffield Star: http://tinyurl.com/yydda2n
