UBER SUMMER GIGS – CARLISLE

It’s grim up north, or so the old adage goes. Whilst affluence, culture and opportunities are seemingly southern centric, the far flung reaches of England are often unfairly given a reputation as somewhat backward in their manifestos. Carlisle house music institution Uber are rightly sticking two fingers up at this clichéd nonsense, fighting emphatically against the city’s rampant ritzy culture and spotlighting the hedonistic allure of electronic music. In their short but illustrious history they’ve brought dance music titans to a city where rave was seemingly long forgotten, hauling in NYC legends Todd Terry and Kenny Dope, scouse upstart Yousef, Chicago aficionado Justin Long and the triple tag team from heaven X-Press 2 down to party all in their intimate 400 capacity venue, amongst a sea of others. A place where house music in all its glorious forms appears at every juncture and where Jack’s Groove powers along like it was 1987.Thier juggernaut of rave continues to gather pace with a sizzling summer selection of parties to furthermore enhance Carlisle’s party pedigree.

The sweltering action takes place with a trimuverate combination of gigs to keep the temperature rising even when the British Weather fails to do so. The first in June brings Uber favourite and house music stalwart Sandy Rivera down, the man whose timeless productions under his own name and the Kings of Tomorrow guise such as ‘Finally’, ‘Young Hearts’ and ‘Dreams’ have sound tracked dancefloors across the globe. He continues to be a DJ heavyweight worldwide, guesting at the likes of Pacha, We Love Sundays, Ministry of Sound and Womb in Tokyo, whilst his compilations for Defected and Renaissance have proven his accolades and sold thousands worldwide. Known for his soulful anthems, Rivera is equally as likely to drop the most upfront European techno as he is a diva detonating Garage anthem, and make it sound like the two were meant for each other. As far as house music goes, he’s simply the bomb.

July sees a double header of two of the most eccentric figures in the genre battling it out, with Tom Middleton bringing his Jedi funk to the forefront against the wrongness of Tim Sheridan. Within his many projects Middleton has continued to tantalise and innovate, creating timeless music as Cosmos and Global Communication whilst treading a path as a DJ that shames others in terms of eclectism. Sheridan’s chameleon like ability to re-invent his sonic capabilities has seen his relevancy stay as potent now delivering wonky minimal grooves in after-hours warehouses as he was serving up the big beat as part of the Dope Smugglaz in the mid nineties. Either one would be reason for the Carlisle rave fraternity to indulge in the clown step, both together is a mouth-wateringly good prospect.

And in the final segment of the summer plan, Uber draft Danny Howells in for an extremely special set. The man has taken great steps since being John Digweed’s warm up DJ at the Bedrock parties in Heaven in the late nineties, rapidly becoming one of the biggest global stars in dance music. His compilations for Global Underground and Azuli Choice have constantly pushed sounds and his diversity has seen him break free of the progressive shackles to adopt a multi-faceted sound encapsulating lush atmospheric deep house as well as menacing techno and dilapidated electro. He continues to DJ at the world’s biggest clubs and festivals, and has even managed to bring a fascination for obscene paisley shirts fully into the public consciousness without a shred of irony. He’s the perfect man to bring Uber’s summer of fun to an end.

Uber’s three residents complete each night. Ki Creighton, Tony van Lierop and Peter Thompson are the foundations of Uber, underpinning each party with their deep, jackin’ and grooving house sounds, and are integral to Uber’s continued rise.
